behind the scenes

Hey, I’m Anna - founder of What the Fig? - a proudly family-run business that’s all about finding old stuff with serious charm.
We’re a small (and slightly chaotic) team made up of me and my family, and we all pitch in behind the scenes. From sourcing to wrapping to endless cups of tea, we’re hands-on every step of the way to bring you one-of-a-kind pieces that have lived a life.
My (slightly unusual) love for the old and well-worn started young - not with antiques, but with vintage farm machinery. Growing up in the countryside, I was fascinated by old tractors and the lives they’d led: years of graft, muddy fields, and stories etched into every scuff and scrape.
That fascination has stayed with me, and now stretches far beyond rusty engines. Whether it’s a hand-thrown vessel from the Mediterranean or a carved wooden tool worn smooth by decades of use, I’m drawn to pieces that have lived. I believe objects carry stories, and that they deserve a second (or third!) chapter in homes that appreciate their quiet beauty and long histories.
What the Fig? is here for the perfectly imperfect. The curious. The can’t-quite-put-your-finger-on-it kind of beautiful. Every piece we stock has been hand-picked because it made us stop and go, “wait... what the fig is that?”
Thanks for being here. We hope you find something that makes you feel the same!
all my love,
